She has also been inspecting the tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms. And hairline cracks have been appearing too. I believe the other units in the block should be facing the same problem. Hmm...is this cracking up really inevitable? Seriously, I don't really care because they don't look serious enough to warrant much attention. But in my mum's view, it's a matter of getting HDB to "make it right". I don't know, do all HDB flats have the same problem?
Also, seems like we can't ever get the same colour of paint on the walls again, over these cracks. Cos probably the existing paint on the walls has lightened due to (if I may put it this way) the "vagaries of nature". Or, perhaps, our leftover tins of paint are too old.

Anyways, here's a picture of how my brother's room wall looks after having its cracks plastered and painted over. Uhm, it was only after the paint dried that we realised it needed a few more extra coats! Oh yes, the cracks stretch from the ceiling to the floor. Very long!

hey, the wall cracks are actually in the plaster layer that is underneath the paint! it's inevitable due to expansion and contraction of the plaster over time...happens in every house. but if the workmanship was good at the time of construction, the cracks wouldn't be so bad. floor to ceiling doesn't sound too good. and yah, the paint will need a few coats, each one shld be left to dry before the next is applied!
for your floor tiles, actually during construction, the contractor should leave sufficient gap with grouting (that thing between your tiles) for expansion. likely that the gaps are not enough, hence the tiles are starting to crack cuz no space to expand!
i didn't know that u can actually ask hdb to come and make good these defects! is there a warranty period or something in the contract for new flats? if you find out let me know leh...so next time when i get my duxton flat know...heh...

wah i got a thesis on this!!! thanks gal! architect is architect man. haha. thnks for your advice :) i think cos my flat is a premium flat, ie flooring and bathrooms all done the same for every unit, that's why all these cracks are appearing. contractor must do for every single unit mah, so prob not enough care went into it! anyhow hantam type. i believe most premium flats should be facing the same problem!
warranty: yes, got warranty period. this kind of thing my mother knows best. haha. so hdb has to fix for free.
